  2. Direct numerical simulation is performed for flow separation over a bump in a turbulent channel. Comparisons are made between a smooth bump and one where the lee side is covered with replicas of shark denticles – dermal scales that consist of a slender base (the neck) and a wide top (the crown). As flow over the bump is under an adverse pressure gradient (APG), a reverse pore flow is formed in the porous cavity region underneath the crowns of the denticle array. Remarkable thrust is generated by the reverse pore flow as denticle necks accelerate the fluid passing between them in the upstream direction. Several geometrical features of shark denticles, including some that had not previously been considered hydrodynamically functional, are identified to form the two-layer denticle structure that enables and sustains the reverse pore flow and thrust generation. The reverse pore flow is activated by the APG before massive flow detachment. The results indicate a proactive, on-demand drag reduction mechanism that leverages and transforms the APG into a favourable outcome.

  3. Direct numerical simulations of spanwise-rotating turbulent channel flow with a parabolic bump on the bottom wall are employed to investigate the effects of rotation on flow separation. Four rotation rates,$$Ro_b := 2\varOmega H/U_b = \pm 0.42$$,$$\pm$$1.0, are compared with the non-rotating scenario. The mild adverse pressure gradient induced by the lee side of the bump allows for a variable pressure-induced separation. The separation region is reduced (increased) when the bump is on the anti-cyclonic (cyclonic) side of the channel, compared with the non-rotating separation. The total drag is reduced in all rotating cases. Through several mechanisms, rotation alters the onset of separation, reattachment and wake recovery. The mean momentum deficit is found to be the key. A physical interpretation of the ratio between the system rotation and mean shear vorticity,$$S:=\varOmega /\varOmega _s$$, provides the mechanisms regarding stability thresholds$$S=-0.5$$and$$-$$1. The rotation effects are explained accordingly, with reference to the dynamics of several flow structures. For anti-cyclonic separation, particularly, the interaction between the Taylor–Görtler vortices and hairpin vortices of wall-bounded turbulence is proven to be responsible for the breakdown of the separating shear layer. A generalized argument is made regarding the essential role of near-wall deceleration and resultant ejection of enhanced hairpin vortices in destabilizing an anti-cyclonic flow. This mechanism is anticipated to have broad impacts on other applications in analogy to rotating shear flows, such as thermal convection and boundary layers over concave walls.

Electromagnetic wave absorbing material (EWAM) plays an essential role in manufacturing stealth aircraft, which can achieve the electromagnetic stealth (ES) by reducing the strength of the signal reflected back to the radar system. However, the stealth performance is limited by the coating thickness, incident wave angles, and working frequencies. To tackle these limitations, we propose a new intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided ES system where an IRS is deployed at the target to synergize with EWAM for effectively mitigating the echo signal and thus reducing the radar detection probability. Considering the monotonic relationship between the detection probability and the received signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) at the radar, we formulate an optimization problem that minimizes the SNR under the reflection constraint of each IRS element, and a semi-closed-form solution is derived by using Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed IRS-aided ES system compared to various benchmarks.

  6. The logarithmic law of the wall does not capture the mean flow when a boundary layer is subjected to a strong pressure gradient. In such a boundary layer, the mean flow is affected by the spatio-temporal history of the imposed pressure gradient; and accounting for history effects remains a challenge. This work aims to develop a universal mean flow scaling for boundary layers subjected to arbitrary adverse or/and favourable pressure gradients. We derive from the Navier–Stokes equation a velocity transformation that accounts for the history effects and maps the mean flow to the canonical law of the wall. The transformation is tested against channel flows with a suddenly imposed adverse or favourable pressure gradient, boundary layer flows subjected to an adverse pressure gradient, and Couette–Poiseuille flows with a streamwise pressure gradient. It is found that the transformed velocity profiles follow closely the equilibrium law of the wall.

    Abstract Reinforcement learning (RL) has potential to provide innovative solutions to existing challenges in estimating joint moments in motion analysis, such as kinematic or electromyography (EMG) noise and unknown model parameters. Here, we explore feasibility of RL to assist joint moment estimation for biomechanical applications. Forearm and hand kinematics and forearm EMGs from four muscles during free finger and wrist movement were collected from six healthy subjects. Using the proximal policy optimization approach, we trained two types of RL agents that estimated joint moment based on measured kinematics or measured EMGs, respectively. To quantify the performance of trained RL agents, the estimated joint moment was used to drive a forward dynamic model for estimating kinematics, which was then compared with measured kinematics using Pearson correlation coefficient. The results demonstrated that both trained RL agents are feasible to estimate joint moment for wrist and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint motion prediction. The correlation coefficients between predicted and measured kinematics, derived from the kinematics-driven agent and subject-specific EMG-driven agents, were 98% ± 1% and 94% ± 3% for the wrist, respectively, and were 95% ± 2% and 84% ± 6% for the metacarpophalangeal joint, respectively. In addition, a biomechanically reasonable joint moment-angle-EMG relationship (i.e., dependence of joint moment on joint angle and EMG) was predicted using only 15 s of collected data. In conclusion, this study illustrates that an RL approach can be an alternative technique to conventional inverse dynamic analysis in human biomechanics study and EMG-driven human-machine interfacing applications.

    Hurricanes often induce catastrophic flooding due to both storm surge near the coast, and pluvial and fluvial flooding further inland. In an effort to contribute to uncertainty quantification of impending flood events, we propose a probabilistic scenario generation scheme for hurricane flooding using state-of-art hydrological models to forecast both inland and coastal flooding. The hurricane scenario generation scheme incorporates locational uncertainty in hurricane landfall locations. For an impending hurricane, we develop a method to generate multiple scenarios by the predicated landfall location and adjusting corresponding meteorological characteristics such as precipitation. By combining inland and coastal flooding models, we seek to provide a comprehensive understanding of potential flood scenarios for an impending hurricane. To demonstrate the modeling approach, we use real-world data from the Southeast Texas region in our case study.
